Near surface geophysical techniques can acquire information over a larger area, in a more rapid time frame, using less invasive procedures, and at a lower cost than drilling alone.

GeoSynoptics is a geophysical services company located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada that conducts non-invasive near surface geophysical surveys. This includes data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. GeoSynoptics clients are varied, and include environmental consultants, geotechnical engineering firms, municipalities, and surface mines that want to solve a variety of problems including bedrock, target, and contaminant plume mapping. Since geophysical data is acquired digitally, with integrated differential GPS, useful maps can be produced efficiently and accurately with preliminary results often available within days of acquisition.

By helping clients develop a more comprehensive understanding of their site we help them save time and money over the life of their project through targeted drilling and better interpretation.

Targeted Drilling

Near surface geophysical techniques can acquire information over a larger area, and more rapidly than drilling alone. Geophysical surveys are planned so that sample density is appropriate for the anticipated targets and is often dependent on the size, depth and most important, the anticipated target response. With forethought, small randomly dispersed targets, such as oil drums, barrels, slag, or archaeological features can be identified through a geophysical survey. A well designed survey will ensure that all targets are identified at the outset of a project instead of discovering unknown targets at the end of a project.

In addition, since most geophysical techniques are non-invasive, targeted drilling (or digging) reduces the disturbance to surrounding soils and vegetation. This results in a cost savings associated with both operational and rehabilitation costs.

Interpretation

By its very nature drilling and core logging produce sparse data points that must be interpolated and interpreted through the knowledge and experience of an experienced geologist or hydrogeolgist. Often times there is information between samples that can not be anticipated such geologic structures (paleochannels directing flow) or even other sources of contamination. Interpreted geophysical maps are an excellent aid in understanding your site. Using geophysics in conjunction with on the on the ground mapping, core logs and hydrogeological sampling will increase the confidence and accuracy of any site interpretation.

Cost Savings

The cost-savings associated with integrating a geophysical survey into your project plan are clear. Unlike a drilling program that acquires only few, or at most a few tens of data points with a large amount of linear and geological interpolation between samples, geophysical methods can acquire hundreds or thousands of points over a large geographic extent in the same amount of time it takes to drill even one well. Geophysical data, used alone, or in conjunction with a drilling program can produce an accurate subsurface picture. A well planned and well executed geophysical program will help direct drilling and reduce project costs.
